Remember the Tracey Thurman Story?

Remember the Tracey Thurman Story? Tracey Thurman is known as a Connecticut housewife who suffered domestic violence done by her husband, Charles Buck Thurman. The dreadful abuse came to a climax in one bloody night when Buck Thurman stabbed Tracey 13 times. Buck was then arrested, and Tracey could be saved by doctors.

Tracey Thurman was the inspiration of Thurman Law which called for mandatory arrests in wife-beating cases in Connecticut and several other states. Thurman Law was resulted from Tracey’s effort when she sued police officers as she failed to get proper protection from the local police force in 1989. A film inspired by Tracey Thurman story was made in 1989, directed by Robert Markowitz.

Ministers "too cosy with the alcohol trade as doctors warn extra 250,000 lives are at risk from liver disease"

Ministers "too cosy with the alcohol trade as doctors warn extra 250,000 lives are at risk from liver disease" -

A group of leading doctors will today brand ministers’ strategy for tackling Britain’s booze culture ‘inconsequential’ and blame ministers for being ‘too close’ to the drinks industry. The liver disease specialists claim up to 250,000 extra lives could be lost in the next 20 years if the Government fails to introduce proper minimum pricing for alcohol.

Professor Sir Ian Gilmore, past president of the Royal College of Physicians; Nick Sheron, from the University of Southampton; and Chris Hawkey, of the Queen’s Medical Centre, University Hospital, Nottingham, are launching their attack in The Lancet journal. They argue that while stores such as Asda and Tesco are part of Health Secretary Andrew Lansley’s Responsibility Deal Board that is supposed to tackle the issue, UK drinks producers and retailers are ‘reliant on people risking their health to provide profits’. Ministers aim to tackle Britain’s chronic booze culture by banning the sale of alcohol below cost price and increasing duty on high-strength beer.

Professor Gilmore says the plans are ‘inconsequential because of the tiny fraction of sales that fall into either category’. A survey last week found that this minimum price scheme would have affected just one out of 3,600 alcohol offers currently in shops. Under the Government’s plans, a drinker would typically end up paying just over 20p per unit for lager and wine.

But experts are calling for a minimum price of 50p a unit – which would cause a significant dent in alcohol sales. Using figures from the Office for National Statistics, the doctors predict that over the next 20 years between 160,000 and 250,000 extra lives could be lost in England and Wales if the Government fails to act.

Skyrim

Skyrim - Bethesda is turning the lights down low and playing some Barry White in hopes that Elder Scrolls fans will get to making little Elder Scrolls fans.

With camera swoops and thespian flourish, Bethesda's new Skyrim trailer gives us just what we needed no more of: A whole lotta snow.

Look past that and you'll notice some pretty spectacular reveals. There's the part where the camera's flying over a bunch of pine trees. Yeah, I know that's what dragons do, but how about dragon riding? Just because Bethesda's cautioned not to count on saddling one of these fire-breathing lizards doesn't mean it's off limits to modders, does it?

There's the part where someone's running (you can run in Skyrim, who knew?) and the part where you're sneaking up on a deer. Someone cuts someone else's throat near a fire pit, while another stabs downward in what appears to be one of the battle system's impressive new finishing moves. A bluish orb sparks from a staff, and someone punches the ground Neo style and detonates a fire wave. Cut to bowstrings, incantations, more finishing moves, blood spatter it's a crazy feature-tease smorgasbord. All of that's intercut with scenes of the dragon-born (that'll be you) pounding on a giant hook-winged reptile.

How about that choir half singing, half shouting Oblivion's theme song? You want to dress something up, just add voices. It's cliché because it works.

And cue finish, peeking over the craggy spine of some mountain range, pulling up and over some of the prettiest scenery I've ever seen in a game.

King County Metro

King County Metro - As Seattle braced for a possible snowstorm Wednesday, transportation officials were asking commuters and transit riders to be prepared and to check on the latest conditions before embarking.

Buses in most parts of King County were expected to be running normal routes Wednesday morning with no chains. But buses could switch to limited snow routes if temperatures drop during the day, which they’re expected to do.

Weather forecasters are predicting cold temperatures and snow will increase during the day on Wednesday. King County Metro Transit advises bus riders to plan ahead for rapidly changing travel conditions on Wednesday, and into Thursday.

Wednesday’s snowfall may start out light in some areas, but transit users should plan ahead for bus trips that could be disrupted, delayed, and on snow routing. Even though weather in the morning may not be bad in your area, you should leave from a bus stop or park-and-ride that also has service when buses are on snow routes in case travel conditions deteriorate by the afternoon commute.

At 4 a.m., SDOT plans to deploy 10 plows in North Seattle and eight plows in South Seattle, the agency said in a news release. At 9 a.m., SDOT will shift to a 24-hour snow response plan, deploying 30 trucks with plows in trouble spots. SDOT also start pre-treating streets Tuesday with salt brine.

Wednesday’s forecast could create challenges for all vehicles, especially if the snow begins to fall during the afternoon commute. Other areas, particularly in the Snohomish-King County convergence zone area, could see snow in the morning. Bus operations could change rapidly depending on traffic and travel conditions.

Here are some tips for bus travel this week:

-. Know the snow routing for your bus route. Check the timetables at Metro Online for snow route maps for each route. Not every bus route has snow routing, but most do;

-. When buses are on snow routing, some streets and bus stops may be missed and there are often delays due to travel conditions. There is new snow routing in many areas that is different from past years, so be sure to check the snow routes for all the routes you use most often;

-. If you haven’t already, sign up for Transit Alerts to keep up with any major changes to bus service. The alerts can be received as email or text messages. Go to www.kingcounty.gov/metro/snow to subscribe;

-. Metro is using a new online color-coded map to keep riders informed of the status of its bus service, which can be found online at: www.kingcounty.gov/metro/snow. All bus routes are assigned into one or more of seven geographic areas within King County. When there is snow or ice on the roads, the service status of each area will be color coded and displayed on the online map. Green indicates buses are operating on normal routes; yellow that some – but not all – routes in the area are on snow routes (primarily in higher elevation areas); and red tells you that all bus routes in the entire geographic area are on snow routing;

-. People without online access can call the Customer Information Office at (206) 553-3000. General information about service will also be sent out via the kcmetrobus Twitter account;

-. Be patient. Buses are not always on schedule in snowy or icy conditions. And, increased ridership during bad weather can result in crowded buses and a longer-than-usual wait on the phone for the Customer Information Office;

-. Dress warmly for the walk to the bus stop, expect delays, and wear appropriate footwear for the weather;

-. Head for bus stops on main arterials or at major transfer points such as park and ride lots, transit centers, or shopping centers; and

-. Riders should wait at bus stops at the very top or very bottom of hills, because buses are often unable to stop for passengers on inclines.

Beaverton School

Beaverton SchoolBeaverton School District leaders are a couple of weeks away from revealing a prioritized list of 41 potential district-wide cuts that will surely lead to deep staffing cuts and higher class sizes in the 2011-12 school year.

Superintendent Jerry Colonna told the district’s Budget Committee Tuesday night that the list represents $46.8 million in reduction options, and 50 percent of those are sustainable.

Every year, a collection of community members and school board members volunteer their time to oversee the budget process and recommend revisions. They're one of few groups in education with a simple name the Beaverton Budget Committee.

Here's how the budget process works, according to the district: Administrative staff prepare a proposed budget, which is presented to the budget committee. The committee reviews the proposed budget and takes public comment. It has the power to recommend revisions before approving the budget for adoption by the school board.

It's not a free for all, however. The budget committee is limited in what it can change. Student transportation, for example, is required by law, and changes in the length of the school year must be approved by employee unions. The district is bound by its own policies and regulations as well.

Over the last several months, the district has collected budget suggestions from staff and community members after Colonna announced that Beaverton faced a projected $30 million to $40 million general fund budget shortfall for next year.

Last week, Mark McMullen, senior economist for the state, reported that Oregon’s economy had turned the corner and was beginning to recover, but not enough to prevent reductions in state services and programs.

In light of the revised state estimates released in the Feb. 15 economic forecast, the Beaverton School District is now bracing to cut $26 million to $33 million from its 2011-12 budget.

Colonna said Tuesday that the district would move forward with a plan to identify $32.8 million in budget reductions.

While that range is a marked improvement from earlier projections, determining what cuts to make remains a daunting challenge for district leaders as they have already been forced to carve $80 million from school budgets in the last three years.

Deadliest Catch Star Found Dead

Deadliest Catch Star Found Dead - Justin Tennison, one of the featured fishermen on “The Deadliest Catch,” has been found dead at 33,a year after castmate Captain Phil Harris passed away.

Police discovered the body of engineer/deckhand Tennison in a hotel room in Homer, Alaska on Tuesday, according to police reports, a small amount of marijuana and some alcohol were found near his body.

Space Shuttle Discovery

Space Shuttle Discovery - The launch of NASA’s Glory spacecraft from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California has changed its launch date again and is now planned for no earlier than Friday, Feb. 25 at 5:09 a.m. EST.

Currently, NASA and Orbital Sciences Corp. engineers are troubleshooting a technical issue that came up Wednesday during the initial launch attempt.

The launch will go live through NASA Television and live coverage is planned to begin at 3:30 a.m. EST.

Space shuttle Discovery will deliver the Express Logistics Carrier 4 (ELC-4), a Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) and critical spare components to the International Space Station on an 11 day mission.

Nasa states that the data collected from the Glory mission will allow scientists to better understand how the sun and tiny atmospheric particles called aerosols affect Earth’s climate. Both aerosols and solar energy influence the planet’s energy budget, the amount of energy entering and exiting Earth’s atmosphere. An accurate measurement of these impacts is important in order to anticipate future changes to our climate and how they may affect human life.

West Indies Vs. South Africa

West Indies Vs. South Africa - The ICC World Cup 2011 continues today with the match up between South Africa and the West Indies. There are quite a few celebrity Cricket fans who will probably be watching SA vs. WI online today, including Daniel Radcliffe and Princes William and Harry.

We can’t help but wonder if some famous names from South Africa and the West Indies will also be rooting for their team in today’s match up. Famous South African celebs include Charlize Theron and Dave Matthews. Some names you will recognize from the West Indies are Lil’ Kim and Alicia Keys, who are both Jamaican.

South Africa are batting on 138/2 in 28 overs with spikker Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers at the crease as they chase 223 against West Indies at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday.

Live Score

The Proteas wouldn't have expected a more poor start to their innings against the Windies. First they lost their opener Hashim Amla and then it was the big-match player Jacques Kallis to walk off the crease with 1 run written against his name.

Both wickets fell in controversial fashion. In case of Amla (14), paceman Kemar Roach had overstepped slightly while bowling and Kallis just walked off after being caught by skipper Darren Sammy in the slip off left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn's bowling. There was doubt that the ball had carried off his bat. South Africa fell to 20/2 in 5 overs.

Whatever the case, the spinner-pacer combination worked well for the West Indies.

West Indies innings

West Indies were all out for 222 as the South Africa bowlers tightened the noose at death to push the opposition to the wall.

Early in the innings, West Indies opener Chris Gayle departed on the third ball of the match with offie Johan Botha claiming his wicket. A surprising decision by South Africa skipper Graeme Smith to give the ball to off-spinner Johan Botha in the very first over. But, the moved paid off as in the third ball of the over he struck to send danger-man Chris Gayle back into the pavilion.

A good length ball from Botha pitched outside off took the edge off Gayle's bat to and Jacques Kallis did the rest in the first slip. West Indies slumped to 2/1 in the very first over.

One wicket down early on but West Indies had little to fear as their other opener Devon Smith and new man Darren Bravo continued to bat on and frustrate the Protea bowlers. The duo put on 111 for the second wicket before a change in bowling accounted for Bravo on 113/2.

On this occasion too it was Botha, who did the trick, claiming him Leg Before. Bravo scored a fine 73 off 82 balls. Post his dismissal Smith too fell on 117/3 with another spinner Imran Tahir claiming his wicket on 36.

Tahir struck again to scalp another danger-man Ramnaresh Sarwan when the West Indies score was 120. He only put two on board before a LBW decision send him back.

Then Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwyane Bravo got on with another partnership. They put on 58 runs for fifth wicket before Bravo got run out on 40. The Windies score at this juncture was 178/5 in 37.5 overs.

However, post Dwyane Bravo's wicket the West Indies batting line-up faltered and they lost quick wickets. Chanderpaul departed when the score was 209/6 and South African paceman Dale Steyn claimed Kieron Pollard on a duck when the score was 213/7. From here on things became easy for the Protea pacers, who got busy counting the opposition scalps.

West Indies could only manage to put 222 on board and were bowled out in the 48th over.

Earlier, South Africa skipper Graeme Smith won the toss and decided to field.

Cavs deal Williams and Moon to Clippers for Baron Davis

Cavs deal Williams and Moon to Clippers for Baron Davis - The Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers have agreed in principle to a trade that would send Baron Davis and the Clippers' 2011 first-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Mo Williams and Jamario Moon.

By agreeing to the trade, the Cavs could potentially have two top-10 picks this year because the Clippers are also likely to be a lottery team. The pick is unprotected, meaning the Cavs get it regardless of where it is, and the Clippers currently have the seventh worst record in the NBA.

The Clippers would give up a likely top-10 lottery pick to make the savings happen. "That just shows you how much we hate this draft".
Williams reacted on Twitter to the trade Thursday morning, tweeting, "I wanna say thank you to all Cavs fans. It's been great. We've had some really good yrs and memories. I will never forget u guys."

He also tweeted a message to Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, saying, "I love u man."

Davis is still owed nearly $28 million over the next two seasons and the balance of his $13 million contract this year. Moon's contract expires after this season. Williams is owed the balance of his $9.3 million salary this season and, with player options of $8.5 million for each of the next two years, potentially could get out of his contract altogether. The savings should give the Clippers more flexibility in free agency the next two seasons.

Williams’ production has taken a hit this season, as his scoring numbers are at their lowest level in five years and he has struggled to get on the floor because of a nagging hip injury. He is averaging 7.1 assists per game, which is a career high.

The production from the 31-year-old Davis has also been in decline in recent seasons, after he joined the Clippers in 2008. He is averaging 12.8 points per game, which is his lowest total since his rookie season in 1999.

Sea Shepherd

Sea Shepherd - Japan has called in the ambassadors of Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands and told them to take action against the anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd. Tokyo has confirmed it has cut short its Antarctic whale hunt for this season. And says it was due to the activities of the militant environmental group. The annual hunt was officially called off today, around six weeks early, to ensure the safety of its crew. The Japanese foreign minister says the three countries could have done more to prevent what he describes, as 'obstructionist activities'. Environmental groups say Japan's announcement is the best sign so far that Japan's hunting days may be coming to an end.

I never thought that I would be spending my 30th birthday in Japan, let alone spending it watching dolphins die on a regular basis; but I suppose we never truly know what life has planned for us because here I am in Japan, on my 30th, watching dolphins die on a regular basis. But there’s no place I would rather be than here in Taiji fighting for this cause that is so close to my heart.

We’ve had two slaughters since my last update; both of them were bloody and brutal. On the 19th, a pod of about 30 striped dolphins were driven in and, as typical with this species, they proceeded to throw themselves onto the jagged rocks of the killing cove. The Taiji dolphin killers nonchalantly pushed them off the rocks with their white rubber boots or grabbed them by the rostrum and flung them back into the water. All of this happened in clear view of the beach at the Cove and I was shocked when I turned around and saw a father with his three young children standing on the street watching this happen. When did dolphin killing become an acceptable family pastime?

Cassy Herkelman

Cassy Herkelman - WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Cassy Herkelman, 1 of 2 girls who qualified for the first time for the Iowa high school wrestling tournament, will be honored by a national wrestling museum in Waterloo.

Herkelman became the first female wrestler to win a match when her first-round opponent defaulted at last week's tournament. She will be honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum Tuesday afternoon during the African-American Wrestling Experience. The event includes five prominent black wrestlers, including Iowa State coach Kevin Jackson.

How much is a victory worth if you didn't win?

Last Thursday Cassy Herkelman had to confront this question as she became the first female to "win" a match in Iowa's state wrestling tournament for high school students. Her opponent, Joel Northrup, a favorite in the 112-pound weight class, defaulted rather than face a girl on the mat, citing his religious convictions. None of Herkelman's other opponents refused to face her and she was eliminated after losing two matches. The other female competitor, Megan Black, also lost all of her matches, with no opponents declining to face her.

Chicago Mayoral Election

Chicago Mayoral Election - The City Council was sure to see some serious upheaval this election cycle, and the competitiveness of the fights for alderman is showing in tonight’s results: fourteen of the 50 wards appear set to head to runoffs on April 5.

There are still around fifty precincts still waiting to report around the city, but races around Chicago are yet to be determined. And many incumbent aldermen will be facing heated competition in those races six weeks from now.

Ald. Freddrenna Lyle in the 6th Ward will be facing off with Roderick T. Sawyer, son of former mayor Eugene Sawyer. In the 50th, Bernie Stone, the council’s oldest alderman, won only 37 percent of the vote in his five-person race, and will have to take on feisty challenger Debra L. Silverstein, who came in second with 33 percent.

A couple of very crowded races will be significantly narrowed down. The race to replace Helen Shiller in the 46th had eleven candidates on the ballot — James Cappleman and Molly Phelan both won just shy of twenty percent, and will compete for the sixty percent of the vote their nine other candidates split in today’s vote. And in the 24th Ward, incumbent Sharon Denise Dixon and challenger Michael D. Chandler emerged from a field of 18 candidates, the least among whom won only 37 votes.

And as mentioned earlier in the night, Che “Rhymefest” Smith is headed for a runoff with incumbent Willie Cochran in the 20th. Rey Colon narrowly avoided a runoff in the 35th Ward, and Ameya Pawar pulled off the upset win in the 47th, beating Tom O’Donnell without requiring a runoff.

Emanuel needed more than 50 percent of the vote to win. The other major candidates former Chicago schools president Gery Chico, former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and City Clerk Miguel del Valle had hoped to force a runoff but were no match for Emanuel.Chico had 24 percent of the vote compared to 9 percent for both del Valle and Braun. HuffPost Chicago will be live blogging about the Chicago elections now until the results come in Tuesday night. Stay tuned.

Former White House chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel appears to have a new title: Chicago’s mayor-elect.

With 84 percent of the precincts counted, Emanuel has 55 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s mayoral election.

If those numbers hold, Emanuel would win the race outright, avoiding another six weeks in a runoff. CNN was projecting him to do so.

Emanuel appears to be riding a $12 million media blitz, a near endorsement from President Obama and the full endorsement of former President Bill Clinton to a one-and-done victory over three major rivals.

In second place was former school board chief Gery Chico, with 24 percent. Former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and City Clerk Miguel del Valle each had 9 percent.

With Braun coming in behind del Valle, Emanuel was poised to capture a big enough chunk of the black vote to close out Chicago’s first wide-open mayor’s race in 64 years.

StreetStrider

StreetStrider - The StreetSrider is an elliptical cross training machine on wheels. Now the exercise that you could only experience in a gym, can now be enjoyed in the great outdoors. The Summit 8r was developed in conjunction with NBC’s hit reality show “The Biggest Loser” and has steadily grown in popularity now that it has become available to the general public.

Striding was very easy to pick up on my first try. It felt like a combination of low impact jogging, skiing, and cycling, and the unit was easily maneuverable given the lean-to-steer design. This machine can really fly once you get going. In fact, it can go as fast as 43 mph. You have complete control over your speed and can handle all sorts of terrain and inclines given the built in 8 Speed Shimano Nexus Transmission with Twist Grip Shifter. This machine can accommodate riders weight of up to 400 lbs. This model comes in 3 colors: Lava Red, Breakwater Blue, and Galaxy Black.

According to elliptigo.com, The Fitness Outlet is its only dealer in the South Sound. The company started carrying the devices late last year and has sold one.

ElliptiGos sell for about $2,400, and for another $350 you can buy a trainer that allows you to ride the device in place like a traditional elliptical trainer. McLendon says a high-quality indoor elliptical trainer, his most popular seller, goes for that much or more.

The ElliptiGo was invented by former triathlete Bryan Tate and mechanical engineer Brent Teal. Tate hatched the idea when his body could no longer handle the impact of running. However, he wasn’t the first with this idea. In 2003, Pasco brothers Walt and Steve Krul built a similar device called the WitFit. In 2005, when The News Tribune covered the launch of their devices, the WitFits were being promoted as the world’s only elliptical devices. The Kruls were successful in getting a patent for the WitFit, but their business never seemed to prosper. The biggest difference between the WitFit and the ElliptiGo is that the earlier device had four wheels instead of two and moving hand rods instead of bike handle bars. Another device, the 3-wheeled StreetStrider, was invented by University of Alabama physiologist David Kraus in 2007.

Komo Weather

Komo Weather - Parts of Seattle saw a dash of snow Monday night as the region got a taste of wintery weather expected later this week.

Snow mixed with rain fell briefly on parts of Queen Anne hill late Monday, KOMO/4 reports. Sleet fell in other areas in and around the city. More mixes of rain and snow were possible between Seattle and Everett during the night, KOMO reports.

Heavy rains, wind and unusual cold are all characteristics of La Nina, the weather pattern that has been thrashing Washington with stormy weather this winter. The heavy levels of rainfall and snow create a dangerous situation as the water levels in local creeks and rivers rise and flood.Temperatures were expected to reach a high Tuesday of 45 degrees, with rain showers.

A Winter Storm Watch already is in effect for later in the week from Wednesday morning through Thursday morning for parts of the region, including the area from Snohomish County north to the Canadian Border and the Eastside foothills of King County, KOMO reports.

Washington floods can cause serious damage to houses, businesses and property, but can also be extremely dangerous to vehicles on the road as they attempt to forge the high waters. Even when the water over the roadway appears shallow it can be extremely dangerous for a vehicle.

Government Shutdown 2011

Government Shutdown 2011 - Congressional Democrats are accusing Republicans of setting Washington on course for a shutdown, warning that if the government goes off-line over a budget impasse it will count as a GOP "failure."

The government has been operating since October 1, 2010 -- the beginning of fiscal year 2011 -- under a series of continuing resolutions: budgets where Congress simply re-ups funding for programs at previous years’ levels, with a tweak here and there, but usually no major changes.

"There's a perception that was not present in 1995 that public employees are almost a privileged class," said Richard Vedder, an economics professor with Ohio University who studies the labor movement.

The federal employee unions are pushing back hard against the GOP-proposed cuts as lawmakers debate a spending bill to fund the government for the rest of 2011. Republicans want to cut $61 billion from 2010 spending levels, while Democrats are pushing for far more modest fiscal trimming.

They say making serious cuts now is the only way to show the government is serious about reigning in a skyrocketing national debt.

Some House freshmen have already threatened to vote “no” for any proposal, even a very short-term one, that doesn’t deliver the $100 billion in cuts they’re demanding.

It’s that cohort that appears to be hardening Boehner’s message, leading Republican leadership from their stance a month ago, when they were scoffing at the idea of a full-out shutdown, to today, where a shutdown seems so likely that the two parties are already pointing blaming fingers across the aisle.

Should the government shut down, here's what would happen in Nevada:

- almost 400,000 Nevadans could stop receiving Social Security checks

- more than 275,000 could lose Medicare coverage

- nearly 250,000 could lose Medicaid coverage

- nearly 250,000 veterans, as well, would stop receiving their benefits

- more than 10,000 military employees, and almost 40,000 federal employees and retirees, would stop receiving their checks

And if the shutdown persists, tax refunds would be delayed for the nearly 1 million Nevadans who receive them every year.

Justin Bieber haircut

Justin Bieber haircut - After snagging MVP honors last week at the celebrity All-Star game in Los Angeles, Justin Bieber is making headlines again this time for the simple act of cutting his hair. Hanging out with Rascal Flatts on Monday, Bieber tweeted a post haircut pic of them making a music video, then announced on Twitter that he'd be selling off the hair for charity.

As the Justin Bieber hair hoopla continues, it’s hard not to compare his new ‘do to another famous teen we love Emma Watson. The Harry Potter star’s current pixie definitely resembles The Biebs’ newly styled mane.

Explained Bieber: "I just wanted a kind of a change, I didn't want to cut it all off, but I had had it for 3 1/2 years, I had just gotten sick of it, it was in my eyes, I didn't want it in my face, I just wanted to change it up."

Justin has caused a firestorm with his decision to cut his sacred locks, but many Beliebers are fans of the new ‘do.

Santorum visits Spartanburg, sounds alarm about health care reform

Santorum visits Spartanburg, sounds alarm about health care reform - Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., warned a crowd of about 60 local Republicans Monday night that the country will be irreparably damaged should the party fail to repeal federal health care reform.“If we don't repeal ‘Obamacare,' America as we know it is over,” he told the Palmetto House Republican Women and other members of the conservative faithful during a dinner speech held at the Marriott in Spartanburg. For Santorum, who's considering a bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, Monday's speech represented his 10th trip to the Palmetto State since 2009 and a possible re-launching pad for a political career that was rocked by an 18-point loss in 2006.

The former senator, who did not declare his presidential intentions Monday, was at his most enthusiastic when criticizing Democrats and some Republicans for their support of entitlement programs, most recently the federal health care overhaul.

“What these folks are in Washington is no better than a drug dealer,” said Santorum, who lives with his wife and seven children in northern Virginia.

“They give you a subtle narcotic to make you feel better as you do worse.”

He went on to compare protesting union members in Wisconsin to addicts.

“They are acting like their drug is being taken away from them,” Santorum said.

Santorum also devoted substantial attention Monday night to unrest in the Middle East, what he described as kowtowing to dictators by President Obama, an unjust discarding of the concept of “American exceptionalism” by Obama, and a national security policy that does not adequately address emerging threats.
More generally, he said Republicans must be the party to “allow people to believe in ourselves again.”

Santorum's hourlong speech and question-and-answer session Monday came just two days after U.S. Rep. Michelle Bachmann, R-Minn. delivered a dinner speech at the same Spartanburg hotel.

Spartanburg County Republican Party Chairwoman LaDonna Ryggs took in both speeches and said Santorum and Bachmann “hit some of the same base” and came off as “very intelligent.”

But Ryggs added that the two Republicans' speeches did strike different notes.

While Bachmann was more motivational, Ryggs said, Santorum's speech represented a “call to arms.”

On several occasions, the former Pennsylvania senator called on activists in Monday's audience to make a renewed commitment to becoming involved in the Republican nominating process.

“I know I'm preaching to the choir, but sometimes the choir needs to sing songs,” Santorum said.

Longtime activist Walter McSherry, who said he supported former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani during the last election cycle, stood up during Monday's speech and declared Santorum a strong candidate who is in position to better withstand Democratic attacks than many other potential Republican frontrunners.

Santorum will continue his tour of the Upstate today with scheduled appearances at a Greenville restaurant in the early morning followed by appearances at Spartanburg's Oakbrook Preparatory School and Carolina Pregnancy Center later in the day.

Carmelo Anthony join to New York Knicks

Carmelo Anthony join to New York Knicks - The New York Knicks have beaten their rivals the New Jersey Nets to sign Carmelo Anthony from the Denver Nuggets, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The move that would finish the season-long trade speculation involving Denver's All-Star forward and send him to his desired destination cannot be finalised until Tuesday during a conference call with the NBA office. Assuming it goes through, it puts Anthony alongside Amar'e Stoudemire in a potentially explosive frontcourt – at a heavy cost to the Knicks.

The source provided no other details of who was in the deal, which was first reported on Monday by the Denver Post. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly on the trade.

The Post, citing a league source, said the Knicks would send Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets, who would get additional picks and cash. Along with Anthony, New York would acquire Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman.

ESPN later reported it was a three-way deal with Minnesota, who would acquire Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph from the Knicks for Corey Brewer.

The Nuggets have explored an Anthony trade since he refused to sign the three-year contract extension worth nearly $65m (£40.19m) they offered him last summer. They appeared on the verge of sending him to the Nets on several occasions, but the Knicks increased their offer enough to land Anthony, who was believed to prefer New York all along.

'The Bachelor'

'The Bachelor' - - This week on The Bachelor, Brad Womack visited the remaining contestant’s hometowns. He visited Chantal O’Brien’s family in Seattle, Washington and Ashley’s family in Madawaska, Maine. He also went to Austin, Texas to see Shawntel’s family, and finally to visit Emily and her little girl Rickie. Each week, Oklahoma City viewers tune in to The Bachelor on ABC channel 5 at 7 p.m. to keep track of Brad Womack’s second journey to find love on the popular reality show. Are you one of them?

The date in Seattle seemed to go well with Chantal’s family. Her dad is a former NFL football player, and Brad assured him he would be a great father. Ashley’s date was in the beautiful Madawaska, Maine. Her family was adorable, and it seems that Brad wouldn’t have any major problems if he chose Ashley to propose to. Shawntel’s date was fine, but they introduced it with creepy organ music because of the whole funeral home aspect of her family. Brad seemed a little freaked that she embalms people.

Of course Emily’s hometown date had the whole dynamic of her daughter Rickie. Ultimately, Brad did not want to kiss Emily with her daughter right upstairs, which seems like he would have an issue with that if he ended up choosing Emily because Rickie isn’t going away. However, Brad did make a great effort with the little girl flying a kite with her. Unfortunately, somebody had to go home. It ended up being Shawntel leaving Chantal, Emily and Ashley for the final three contestants. Who do you think Brad Womack will pick? The spoilers all point to Chantal O-Brien. However, Madawaska, Maine and Ashley seemed like a great prospect as well on the hometown dates. At this point it really doesn't seem like he'll choose Emily and Rickie.

Corey Brewer to New York

Corey Brewer to New York - Madison Square Garden just got another former Gator. After trading power forward David Lee to Golden State last year, New York acquired Corey Brewer in a three-team trade with Denver and Minnesota Monday.

The swingman started in 22 of 56 games this season, averaging 8.6 points and 2.7 rebounds a game. Selected seventh overall by the Timberwolves in the 2007 NBA Draft, Brewer could never make his mark in Minnesota. According to Jerry Zgoda of the Minnesota Star-Tribune, “the Wolves concluded he’ll never shoot or handle the ball well enough to warrant a prominent wing spot on a contending team. They also apparently felt he wasn’t the defender — gambles too much, not great off the ball — many Wolves fan thought he was. And he’s set to become a restricted free agent.”

Originally thought to be headed to Denver, there’s a chance the Knicks could shop Brewer if they find a deal before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline. Howard Beck of The New York Times said “there’s a good market for him.”

Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis - Mononucleosis, Infectious mononucleosis (IM, also known as EBV infectious mononucleosis or glandular fever, or Pfeiffer’s disease or illness Filatov and sometimes colloquially as the kissing disease of oral transmission mono or just as in North America and the glandular fever in other English-speaking countries) is a widespread viral disease caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a type of herpes virus, in which more than 90% of adults have been exposed. This is not chronic. Most people are exposed to the virus as children, when the disease produces no symptoms or visible only flu-like symptoms. In developing countries, people are exposed to the virus early childhood mostly in developed countries. Consequently, the disease as it is observed more frequently in developed countries. It is more common among adolescents and young adults.

Especially among adolescents and young adults, the disease is characterized by fever, sore throat and fatigue, and several other signs and symptoms. It is primarily diagnosed by observing symptoms, but the suspicion can be confirmed by several diagnostic tests. The syndrome has been described as an infectious process by Filatov Nile in 1887 and independently by Emil Pfeiffer in 1889. Mononucleosis may increase the risk of developing chronic fatigue syndrome in adolescents, according to a study. Previous studies have indicated that about one in ten adults with acute infectious mononucleosis continue to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, Dr. Ben Z. Katz, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, and colleagues write. Katz and other researchers followed more than 300 teenagers from the disease. About 13 percent of the original study developed chronicfatigue syndrome. During a 12-month follow-up visit, 7 percent had chronic fatigue syndrome, and 24 months, chronic fatigue syndrome has persisted in 4 percent. “In our study, we also followed a group of teenagers who have completely recovered from their mononucleosis, Dr. Katz told Reuters Health. “We are now trying to understand what differentiates adolescents who recover from those who have not,” he said.

Accenture Match Play 2011 Brackets Formed

Accenture Match Play 2011 Brackets Formed - The Accenture Match Play 2011 tournament is like March Madness. In fact, the Accenture Match Play 2011 bracket is still a field of 64, and doesn't need to expand to 68. What's more, upsets are even more common
in this tournament than they are in the NCAA, as the high seeds don't usually make it to the end. Therefore, although Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are No. 1 seeds, few expect them to make up the Final Four. In fact, the Accenture Match Play 2011 bracket may see them all gone before the weekend.

The tournament doesn't start until Wednesday, but the bracket was officially set yesterday. Lee Westwood leads the Bobby Jones section, with Martin Kaymer the top seed in the Gary Player region, Tiger Woods in front of the Sam Snead group, and Phil Mickelson favored in the Ben Hogan bracket. But the Accenture Match Play 2011 pairings probably don't benefit the top seeds that much. Westwood faces Henrik Stenson first, and is in a regional with Steve Stricker, Retief Goosen and Luke Donald. Kaymer has Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Jim Fuyrk and Hunter Mahan in his bracket as well. For Woods, he starts off against Thomas Bjorn, with either Geoff Ogilvy or Padraig Harrington waiting next. With Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey and Bubba Watson in his section as well, Woods may actually be an underdog to get out of his side if the bracket.

The Accenture Match Play 2011 schedule is capped off with Mickelson, Graeme McDowell, Matt Kuchar and Ian Poulter heading the Ben Hogan regional. However, it might be wiser to look at the smaller names, and lower seeds, as potential winners in these brackets. Stenson is a 16'th seed, yet he won this tournament in 2007. Ian Poulter won it all as a three seed last year, and is a three seed again in the Hogan regional. Woods has won this event three times, but that hasn't been a prerequisite for success nowadays.
If the Accenture Match Play 2011 tournament has one top seed make it to the round of 16, it might actually be a surprise. Stricker lost in the first round as a No. 1, and no other top seed made it past the second. Therefore, Westwood, Kaymer, Woods and Mickelson are greater long shots than many other lower ranked players.

WWE Elimination Chamber

WWE Elimination Chamber - At last night's Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, Christian made his long awaited WWE return to help Edge fend off Alberto Del Rio following Edge's successful World Heavyweight Championship defense inside the chamber. And the second that happened, you know exactly what fans across the country were thinking: Could we see Edge wrestle Christian at Wrestlemania 27 after all?

In fact, based on the thousands and thousands of comments I've read, numerous B/R readers predicted that the WHC bout at Wrestlemania would eventually become a Triple Threat match between Edge, Christian and Del Rio. Well, it looks like you guys might be right. After all, this match makes a ton on sense from a booking perspective.

Del Rio put Christian on the shelf several months ago, Christian and Edge are "lifelong friends" (remember, they're not brothers anymore!), and fans want to see this match.

So why not make it happen? We all know that if Christian isn't involved in this bout, either as a competitor or a special guest referee, he's probably going to be relegated to the Money in the Bank match. And he's not winning that. The best way to get the most out of Captain Charisma is to have him play a huge role in the Edge/Del Rio feud, with him appearing as the third competitor being the most logical choice.

Minneapolis Airport

Minneapolis Airport - Hundreds of flights were canceled at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and officials in several states advised people to stay off the roads as a winter storm blew across the Upper Midwest on Sunday. Even before the worst of the storm hit, Delta Airlines canceled about 700 flights to and from the Twin Cities airport and other airlines thinned their schedules, “said spokeswoman Melissa Scovronski airport. She said Sunday afternoon, the storm had closed two of four runways at the airport.

In Detroit, the airline canceled about 230 flights as the airport of the city Metro Wayne County, while more than 200 flights through Chicago O’Hare airport were extinguished. Traffic on roads was not much better. The National Weather Service reported blizzard conditions in western Minnesota and has issued a winter storm warning for the rest of the southern half of the state. It was part of a storm that stretched from Montana to Michigan and was moving east. The National Weather Service predicted it would bring a mixture of winter in the Upper Midwest for several days.

Weather Service forecasters predicted that the storm would rise from 10 to 15 inches of snow on Minneapolis Monday afternoon, who promised to do for a ride for those who work hard on President’s Day.

“There will be snow in the morning,” said weather service meteorologist James McQuirter. “There will be a trip in disarray.” A spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Transportation has recommended that people just stay home and watch TV on Sunday afternoon, rather than risk driving in the snow pushed by the wind.

“If people do not need to travel, they should not,” said spokesman Kevin Gutknect. “It’s really hard for people to see.”

The time will not be much better Monday morning, but at least one holiday trip will light more room for snowplows, Gutknecht said. Blowing should be clearing the roads difficult.

Sunday early evening, the weather service reported 9 inches of snow had fallen in Bloomington and a little over 8 inches in Burnsville, two suburbs south of Minneapolis. South Minneapolis reported 6 inches. St. Paul and several cities in the southern half of the state of emergency declared snow, which usually triggers parking restrictions that make it easier to clean the streets. Minneapolis was not just Sunday night. As the storm eastward, he also invited the travel warnings in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation warned that roads could become impassable due to a mixture of snow, freezing rain and ice.

In Michigan, state police warned this mixture of snow and freezing rain was expected by Monday noon in the southwestern part of the state. Sunday, WOOD-TV reported that south of U.S. 131 was closed for some time after dozens of vehicles crashed in Mecosta County near Big Rapids.

Malcolm Gladwell blasted for comments on social media

Malcolm Gladwell blasted for comments on social media - CBS) "Tipping Point" author Malcolm Gladwell is taking some flak these days for his contention that relationships forged by social media sites like Twitter and Facebook are not strong enough to overthrow governments. The best-selling author and New Yorker writer argued in a feature piece in that magazine last fall that that social media sites could not play a central role in a revolution.

"The platforms of social media are built around weak [inter-personal] ties," he argued. And "weak ties seldom lead to high-risk activism" of the type needed to overthrow a government." But this month, the government of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was brought down by non-violent protesters who organized their revolt on social media sites.

In a Feb. 2 blog post in the New Yorker , Gladwell argued that the role of Twitter in the Egyptian crisis was incidental and cited many revolts that took place long before social media existed. "People protested and brought down governments before Facebook was invented," he argued. Gladwell, whose best-selling books include "Outliers," "Blink," and "What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures," was included on Time magazine's 2005 list of 100 most influential people.

State road conditions website hampered by heavy traffic

State road conditions website hampered by heavy traffic - With the powerful winter storm that started Sunday making travel hazardous in much of the state, the state 511 road conditions website is being hampered by heavy traffic. Only text reports were being provided Monday morning — not the interactive map — with the following statement: "The Wisconsin 511 Travel Information website is currently experiencing unusually high demand. In order to serve you quickly, we've provided immediate access to the winter road conditions below."

The site is reporting snow covered and slippery highways in every region of the state except the far southern counties and southeast Wisconsin. Close to 15 inches of snow already has fallen in parts of north central Wisconsin, with more snow in the forecast starting Monday afternoon. The next round of snow is expected to be accompanied by gusty winds, so travel conditions could be hazardous due to limited visibility, according to the Department of Transportation state traffic operations center.

Madison streets crews are working on salting the major streets, but no major plowing operation is planned unless Madison gets more than 3 inches of snow — the forecast calls for 3 to 4 inches starting Monday afternoon. "We will evaluate the need for plowing all residential streets, as the next portion of the storm exits the area on Tuesday morning," said Madison Streets Division superintendent Al Schumacher. Schumacher said the main arterials "have been salted and re-salted," and plows have scraped off the crusty ice from the main arterials as well, but won't be scraping the residential areas.

According to the National Weather Service, light snow was falling in northeast Wisconsin Monday morning but heavy snow was reported in north central Wisconsin, with 3 to 5 inches expected in the northern half of the state. Snowfall totals through Monday morning showed the heaviest totals in north central Wisconsin, with Waupaca getting 14.6 inches, Stevens Point 13.0 inches and Merrill 10.2 inches.

Mn Dot Road Conditions

Mn Dot Road Conditions - The Minnesota Department of Transportation calls the roads and highways in southern Minnesota difficult Monday and completely covered in northern Iowa. If you were on the road this weekend you could see some of the results of the storm last winter. A member of the ABC 6 News was on Interstate 35 south of Sunday, when traffic was slow and the conditions were dangerous.Heavy snowfall in central and southern Minnesota on Sunday led to hundreds of flight cancellations and make road travel difficult and dangerous. By Sunday evening, the snowfall reached 10 cm or more in many places in the southern half of the state. Bloomington has received at least 15 inches, 14 inches Eden Prairie, Maplewood 11 inches. MPR meteorologist Paul Huttner said the snow has been reduced from by Monday morning. At noon on Monday, more than a foot of snow is expected in the Twin Cities and most of central Europe and southern Minnesota. MnDOT advises notravel in most parts of Minnesota reported difficult driving conditions on most roads south of St. Cloud. Travel on Interstate 35 north of Duluth was also considered “difficult”. Minnesota State Patrol responded to 284 accidents statewide 9:00 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, including 37 involving injuries. There were no fatalities, but an additional 368 vehicles spun off the road and five semifinals jacknifed.
The State Patrol said 211 of the plant and more than 100 spin-offs were in the Twin Cities area, including a police car that was hit. “It’s down to a fairly rapid pace, and I advise that if you do not need to travel today, it’s probably a good day to sit inside,” said the spokesman Eric Roeske Minnesota State Patrol.

Roeske said roads, just south of the metro have been hardest hit so far. Roeske asked motorists to slow down, wear their seat belts, and leave enough time to get to their destination. MnDOT had its full quota of snowplows onthe roads , but the decline is faster than drivers can push it, spokesman Kevin Gutknecht said. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, spokeswoman Melissa Strovonsky said Delta has canceled 700 flights. These flights were originally scheduled to or from Minneapolis before midnight Sunday. Sunday afternoon, 450 of the 560 arrivals and departures listed – about 78 percent offlights – have been canceled. Scovronski said there would be many more cancellations Sunday and Monday.
The Metrodome’s roof collapsed over two months, but officials are still keeping an eye on the facility during the storm. On 12 December blizzards first a broken side panel and let the air out of a building support. Snow load of the storm broke at least three more panels, and did minor damage inside. Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission Executive Director Bill Lester said that while the roof is scheduled for replacement, his staff does most of the roof to fall in

Before you hit the road, be sure to check the latest South Dakota road conditions.

Who cares about expiring miles?

Who cares about expiring miles? - For most road warriors, frequent flier mileage redemption is a minor perk. The real benefit is the upgrade.

Delta's announcement last week eliminating the expiration date on its SkyMiles program means nothing to anyone who flew the airline at least once a year since any activity within a two-year period kept the miles from expiring anyway. In fact, if you're a frequent flier, it might even make things worse by keeping more miles in the system to compete against you when you look to redeem yours. But frequent fliers know that if miles were issued in paper, they'd be able to fill a swimming pool with them. When you fly a lot, you earn a lot, and you usually earn more than you can burn. Besides, if you're always on the road, your idea of a vacation is often just staying home for seven consecutive days instead of using miles to go anywhere. So why bother to keep flying one airline over the others? Two words: elite status.

Elite status has become so powerful that even formerly-egalitarian Southwest has created its own status levels to treat its most frequent fliers better. On most airlines, once you fly more than 25,000 miles in a year, you get into the elite program. This entitles you to premium check-in and security lines, access to the most desirable seats, and on nearly every airline with a first class cabin (save American), unlimited free domestic upgrades. The upgrade is the primary motivation for nearly every frequent flier. Flying in the pointy end of the plane makes grueling business trips a lot less painful. The only problem is that there are only a certain number of first class seats on each airplane. Airlines have given out lower level elite status like candy, so it can make getting upgrades difficult for all but the highest fliers.

How can you get around that? There are a couple strategies to consider.

This may sound counterintuitive, but if you live in a hub, don't fly the hub airline unless you're a top frequent flier. Let's say you live in San Francisco, for example. United rules the roost at SFO and it has the most nonstop flights to the most destinations from the airport. Because of the convenience factor, United has built a very large following of elite travelers. Try showing up on a Monday morning. The elite security lines can sometimes be longer than the regular ones. And look at the upgrade list for that early flight to Chicago. It's a long one. If you're not a top tier elite flier, you aren't getting that cushy seat. But try flying on one of the airlines without as large of a presence in your city, and you're likely competing with fewer people for that upgrade.

Of course, there's a tradeoff there. Would you rather go nonstop in coach or connect in first class? That's something each traveler has to decide on his own.

United realizes upgrades can be elusive, so it offers a different proposition. Elite travelers get free access to its premium economy section, Economy Plus, with a few extra inches of legroom. So if you have no chance of a first-class upgrade, then flying United will at least get you more room for your legs to breathe. The airline's recent announcement that Economy Plus will survive the merger with Continental means this should continue to be a successful strategy. But there is a tradeoff when you fly United. The airline often has fewer first class seats than its competitors, so that might make you want to look elsewhere in order to score that upgrade. United puts 12 first class seats on its mid-size A320 aircraft. On American's and Delta's similarly-sized 737, however, there are 16 first class seats. It's also not uncommon to see United using smaller 70-seat jets with only six first class seats.

But at least those airplanes have any first class offering at all. While United has aggressively added first class to the 70-seaters that are operated for the airline, not everyone has followed that strategy. US Airways has no first class on its airplanes with fewer than 100 seats. Delta has committed to having first class on its 70 seaters, as has American, but American has very few of those in the network. And nobody offers first class on those 50-seat regional jets. Do your homework to see what kind of airplanes are being flown on the routes you fly most to get an idea of what your upgrade chances will be. You've earned the right to get that upgrade, but you'll need a strategy to compete with the other frequent fliers jockeying for those seats.

ICC World Cup

ICC World Cup - The ICC World Cup 2011 match for today, the fourth one, featuring Australia vs Zimbabwe (Aus vs Zim), is happening at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad.

Australia won the toss against Zimbabwe and chose to bat. Australia made a surprisingly slow start, with Haddin at one stage making just 16 runs off 41 balls.

Australia start their campaign for a fifth ICC Cricket World Cup trophy with a tricky opener against Zimbabwe on Monday.

Australia have been unbeaten in 22 matches in the last two tournaments played in South Africa (2003) and West Indies (2007), under Ricky Ponting.

They have won 23 back to back matches stretching to 1999 and have been unconquered in 29 ties, which includes the unforgettable tied match against South Africa in the semifinal 12 years ago.

On paper, Ponting's men hold a clear edge over the African nation led by Elton Chigumbara, but would be eager not to be tripped by the one-time minnows of the 50-over game as was the case 28 years ago in England.

The Aussies, fresh from a 6-1 rout of their Ashes nemesis England in the following ODI series at home, landed in India only to be rudely awakened by successive defeats in their two practice games against India and South Africa at Bangalore.

But they are sure to hit the strap on the run when their bid to clinch their fifth World Cup crown starts.

The Aussies have a fine batting line-up in which Shane Watson, who opens the batting, and Ponting are crucial in the top order to lay the platform for others to build upon.

But a question mark remains over the ability of the middle order batsmen in playing spin bowling on Indian pitches.

Watson has performed brilliantly with the bat in ODIs in the last year, having scored 832 runs and Zimbabwe's think tank would have talked about ways of stopping the Queenslander from taking the game away.

"It's much different and bigger responsibility in opening the innings than batting at number seven in the last World Cup, a role Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden did so beautifully throughout their career. It's a great responsibility and I'm looking forward to that challenge," said Watson.

Ponting, whose fabulous innings of 140 not out in 121 balls in the 2003 World Cup final buried Indian hopes, has come back into action after a long injury lay-off following a broken little finger sustained during the Ashes series against England. But he has quickly got into his stride with good half-century knocks in two practice games.

It's the form of the others which is a big worry for Australia. Without the presence of the injured Michael Hussey, who was adept in playing the slow bowlers on previous visits to the sub-continent, they lack a batsman around whom the other quick run-getters like Cameron White can play around.

The Indian spinners exposed the chink in the Aussie batting armoury in the practice game when they triggered a collapse and helped the hosts defend a meagre total with aplomb.

Though not too much needs to be read into the practice ties, as Watson insisted earlier, Zimbabwe's think tank would surely have noted this stuttering performance with some glee as their own attack revolves around spin rather than pace as was the case in the past.

In bowling, Australia have a pace attack that can be handy for opposing batsmen even on the slow and low sub-continental wickets.

The biggest plus for them has been the return to what looks like the form of his old by spearhead Brett Lee who is expected to open the bowling with sling-arm action and speedy Shaun Tait with left-arm Mitchell Johnson coming in as first change.

Australia have an excess of riches in pace and medium pace with Watson and John Hastings, who is expected to play, coming in behind the top three. But they lack a top class front-line spin bowler barring Jason Krejza, who has been recalled after several months, to bowl the middle overs when the field is spread out.

Ricky Ponting will create the Australian record of making most appearances in ICC CWC matches when he will take field against Zimbabwe and will overtake former teammate Glenn McGrath in the process.

Ponting, who is also eying rare feat of winning three World Cup trophies as skipper, is tied with McGrath on 39 appearances till date.

Zimbabwe have not been hot property in ODIs over the last few months and barring a few victories over a less than full-strength India at home, have not really been up to the mark.

They have a reasonably sufficient batting line-up in which Brendon Taylor stands out with his ability and experience, but can find the going tough against the Aussie pace attack.

Zimbabwe are hoping that a spin-oriented attack, consisting of former skipper Prosper Utseya, left-armer Ray Price and Graeme Cremer would do the magic against the middle order of Australia.

"It is going to be tough to play the first match of the World Cup before the defending champions Australia. But I think the guys are prepared," leg spinner Cremer said.

Cremer also said the bowlers were learning the tricks of bowling on sub-continental tracks by watching seasoned bowlers like India's main trump card Harbhajan Singh.

"We have watched Harbhajan (Singh) bowl. At what speed he bowls and what length he bowls. It is good for us. And on the last tour to Bangladesh (in December 2010), we saw how our spinners bowled and their spinners, and there tracks are pretty similar to here," said the 24-year-old with 47 one-day wickets to his credit.

"Spin is one of our strengths with which we could take on the Australians, which is a tough team. We ought to restrict them to a low score," said Utseya.

Even with these factors which are likely to help them, the Zimbabweans have a huge task on hand in taming the three-time defending champions and cause the first big upset of the tournament as was the case in 1983 in England.

China Secretly Considers Banning Twitter Like Services To Stop The Spread Of Democracy

China Secretly Considers Banning Twitter Like Services To Stop The Spread Of Democracy - In the wake of huge pro-democracy protests in the Middle East, China is considering cracking down even harder on "microblogs" and other Internet services.

On February 12, reports Perry Link in the New York Review of Books, China's politburo held an emergency meeting to "decide on tactics to counter the current wave of democratization in the Middle East." Among the tactics discussed was increased control over "microblogs," discussion forums, and other Internet communications tools.

Specifically, the Politburo concluded that "efforts to criticize and control microblogs must be sharply increased, and advance measures should be taken to prepare for the possibility that part of the Internet will be shut down."
Here's an excerpt of the meeting notes posted on unofficial China news site Boxun and reprinted in the NYOB:

The agenda for the meeting was “to adjust foreign policy” and the main purpose was to decide on tactics to counter the current wave of democratization in the Middle East. The meeting set revised targets for the police and the military, but the primary emphasis was on propaganda. The meeting called upon the Propaganda Department and its subsidiary organs to do the following:

Halt all independent reports, commentaries, and discussions (including Internet threads), whether in the print media or the Internet, on the situations in Egypt and similar places;

Strengthen work in filtering and managing blogs, microblogs, and discussion forums;

Assure that media in all locations uniformly adhere to the standard texts of the New China News Agency in any report or commentary on the Middle East.

The meeting decided, as well, that all of the major newspapers under the Propaganda Department must strengthen their guidance of public opinion and stress the theme that the current turmoil “is plotted by the United States behind the scenes.” At the same time, efforts to criticize and control microblogs must be sharply increased, and advance measures should be taken to prepare for the possibility that part of the Internet will be shut down.
